Four Tips for Selecting a Vacation Rental When Traveling With an Elderly Parent

A vacation is all about relaxing and getting the family together. So, of course, you want to bring your aging parent along for the trip, but you also want to make sure they're comfortable. Learn some key features you should look for in a vacation rental to help ensure your elderly parent has an awesome time.

1. Ample Bathrooms

Ensure the property has plenty of bathrooms. If you're traveling with the entire family, the last thing you want is for your mom or dad to have to travel to the other side of the house to use the restroom because it's occupied. Properties with several bathrooms throughout the home are best. Additionally, ensure there is at least one bathroom with a walk-in shower if your parent has mobility issues.

2. Open Floorplan

A property with a modern open floorplan is an excellent idea if your loved one uses a scooter, wheelchair, walker, or other mobility aid to get around. Homes with spacious floorplans generally have ample space to accommodate these aids. Houses with older floorplans often have more narrow walkways and openings which can make it harder for your parent to get around. The fewer issues with getting around, the more independent your loved one will feel.

3. Covered Outdoor Seating Areas

If you're headed to a warmer climate, you should also look for a property with outdoor seating areas that are covered. There are a variety of medications that put limits on the amount of sun exposure the person taking the drug can withstand. An outdoor seating area will help allow your loved one to enjoy time outside with the rest of the family, but to do so safely.

4. Accessible Furniture

Look for properties with furniture that is easily accessible. For example, consider a contemporary home styled in a minimalist décor with beds that are just a few inches off the ground. If your mom or dad has mobility issues, getting in and out of a taller bed would be very difficult. From the bed to the furniture in the living room, look for a property that has furniture that is accommodating of everyone. Since most properties have pictures, it should not be hard to find the right property.

To ensure you're able to find exactly what you want in a property, make sure you start your search early. With so many vacation rentals available, you're sure to find exactly what you need and want.
